DIRECT SUPPORT WORKER REQUIRED - URGENT
Casual hours apply – Early morning shifts, afternoon shifts, weekend shifts, day shifts and occasional overnight.
St. Mary’s Health Services is a privately-owned agency based in Chelsea Heights, and providing services throughout the Southern Metropolitan Region of Melbourne. Managed by consumers, advocates and staff, together with family and other community members, we provide support for people with disabilities through a diverse range of community-based programs.
At St. Mary’s Health Services our objective is to ensure that all services are client driven and focused. We strive to work effectively with people in need and to respond flexibly and swiftly as individual requirements dictate. We work closely with State and Commonwealth Government departments, Local Councils, and other service providers; but ensure that our own culture of client and family centred programs drive our agenda.
All staff members at St. Mary’s Health Services contribute to the growth, learning and development of each client. As members of a multi-disciplinary team, staff work through services designed to enhance competency, create a positive self-image and enrich the quality of life of clients of the Agency.
The Support Worker is accountable to the St. Mary’s Health Services Coordinator. The Support Worker is responsible for the provision of care and support to clients of St. Mary’s Health Services and must be skilled in working directly with clients, families and members of the local community. It is important that, in doing so, they impart a positive image from the perspective both of the client and St. Mary’s Health Services as an organisation.
DUTIES– Specific roles may include some or all of the duties listed below
1 To assist the client to meet all personal care needs ensuring that privacy and dignity are maintained at all times.
2 To provide meal assistance and support with showering, dressing and grooming to the client.
3 To provide physical support through transferring, lifting or hoisting in accordance with recommended lifting policies and procedures.
4 To provide a physically and emotionally safe and secure environment this will promote the well-being of the client.
5 Assisting client with electronic and non – electronic communication aids.
6 Community access.
7 Meal preparation and light housework.
8 To administer medication to the client in a safe and timely manner in accordance with the Policy and Procedures of St. Mary’s Health Services.
9 Specific training in these areas will be provided in the form of shadow shifts with client families and known support workers.
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
1. An Australian Resident OR has a Working Visa valid for more than 6 months
2. A keen interest to learn skills in the areas of caring for clients with disabilities (intellectual and physical)
3. An understanding of the rights and needs of people with disabilities and their families.
4. Well developed written and verbal communication skills
5. Flexible availability, particularly in the before school & afterschool hours, and for short shifts if required (2 hours)
6. Regular access to email
7. Owns a mobile phone, with capacity for callers to leave detailed voice messages
8. No injuries; medication; illness; or record of criminal behaviour, that would increase risks to your safety or the safety of our clients:
o impaired judgement, mobility, or concentration
o impaired capacity to control behaviour that could cause harm to others
- First Aid Level One
- Current employee WWCC
- Current Crimcheck
- Full License, and own vehicle
Preferred, but not essential…
- Certificate IV in Disability
- Formal training in the use of hoists
- Experience or willingness to drive a 12 seater van
- Able to drive a manual vehicle
